Google Lunar XPrize

Hey all,

I didn't really know where to put this topic, but I just wanted to entice some discussion on the Google Lunar X Prize. To the extent of my knowledge, I believe only Odyssey Moon is the only official team. For those who do not know of the competition, check out www.googlelunarxprize.org to find out more. The basic premise being send a mobile device to the surface of the Moon and have it roam for 500 meters. The prize is $20 million with a $5 million secondary and $5 million in bonus prizes as well. The final date set is the end of 2012 with the end of 2014 as a backup date with reduced prizes.

I think this is a really great way to show that exploration can be done with costs an order of magnitude lower then what government organizations are using. Thoughts? Comments?

I will be at the The Canadian Space Commerce Association conference tomorrow where Bob Richards, CEO of Odyssey Moon will be giving a presentation on their plans. If anything new comes up I'll post it.

How was the presentation? I

How was the presentation? I really haven't heard much about Odyssey Moon's plans, but I did read that another competitor will attempt to win the prize by mid-2009.

Odyssey Moon has big plans

The presentation was excellent, some interesting ideas. I'm working on getting the presentation posted here. It's obvious Odyssey Moon has big plans well beyond the Google XPrize. The prize is just a way to draw attention to their efforts. One tidbit that people were fascinated with was the idea of backing up the biosphere.
