Why not?

Does anybody know what the major obstacles to constructing a space elevator are or where I could find information on such? Why aren't we building one right now?

The most daunting roadblock

The most daunting roadblock to building an se right now is creating a material with the strength to support the space elevator.

the material

Build the nano fibers into circles and weave them together?
The nanotubes resemble the childs toy ' chineese finger puzzels , or finger traps'. Will the molecules function the same way, and can they be aranged to grip one another? This would forn a very long strand.

Here's a document about space elevators. http://www.aoe.vt.edu/~cdhall/courses/aoe4065/NASADesignSPs/cp210429.pdf

It covers the whole range of the topic and is a great overview of ideas. Enjoy!
